You have heard it a number of times that your computer’s useful life is only three years. Most of the warranties also expire after three years and you face the biggest challenge as your system then starts to fail. Is throwing away the PC and buying new computers is the only solution to this issue? Well, not always indeed. Rather if the PC is properly maintained and is beefed up with occasional upgrades your PC is bound to last more than mere three years.
Keeping your PC updated, especially if you have a number of PCs, certainly demand time and your effort. However when equated to the time and cost required for installing 20 new PCs, the effort seems worthy.
The following checklist focuses on the important maintenance tasks, needed for any business to squeeze life from their existing IT infrastructure.
Install and update Antivirus software: Your computer might slow down if it is affected by the spyware or the virus. Your system needs to perform fast so install and update the antispyware applications every month. Most of the anti spyware applications are free and are user friendly. Do not leave your computer unprotected and install an anti virus application along with the anti spyware software. Once you finish installing these, set them for auto update.
Run the Diagnostic Checks: There are the diagnostic applications, which are integrated into the operating system. You can find these under ‘’system Tools’’ in the Accessories Menu option. Run the diagnostic checks monthly to not only clean your hard drive but also to keep your hard drive free from small errors which can even cause system failure. Once in a month, run the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to keep the hard drive clean.
Remove unnecessary applications: Look for the unnecessary application which you hardly use but which sits as legitimate applications, while eating up your computer resources. Review your users' computers section and remove all the unnecessary application to make your computer work faster.
Upgrade the RAM: Increasing the RAM is one of the cheapest options in improving the PC’s performance. Pump up your older computers with 2 gigabytes of RAM and witness the change it brings in its performance.
Take regular back up: Back up all the PCs at regular interval. This will help you in keeping your documents safe if a severe problem with the PC occurs.
Expanding the lifespan of your PC is easy and an inexpensive way of maintaining your IT infrastructure. With just a few hours time you can now extend the lifespan of your PCs from three to six years!
